Please answer the following questions, either yes or no, and then read the scoring information below to see if you are ready for online learning.

  1. I realize that an online typically will not be easier than an on-campus class.
  2. Having the freedom to choose when I study suits the way I like to work.
  3. I believe that good quality instruction and learning can happen without meeting face to face.
  4. Sometimes I find that when I write, I can take the time to organize my thoughts better than when I talk.
  5. I am able to put in the necessary number of hours (typically 12-15 hours per week per 3-credit course) into the coursework online.
  6. I am able to follow a schedule, keep up with my class work, and turn in assignments on time.
  7. I am comfortable with email, written and electronic communications, accessing the Web, and new technologies.
  8. I am good at getting information through reading articles, textbooks, and websites.
  9. I am a highly self-motivated, self-directed and independent learner.
  10. I own a reliable and up-to-date home computer system.

Scoring Your Answers

9 - 10 "yes " answers : You have all the requirements to do very well in an online course.

6 -8 "yes" answers : You will probably do well with an online course, as long as you pay attention to those areas that may be difficult for you (questions you answered "no" to). Typical difficulties with online learning include getting behind, not reading instructions carefully, not dealing with technical issues, or not spending enough time on assignments.

1-5 "yes" answers: Online courses may not be right for you at this time. Talk to your advisor to see what his/her opinion is. If you decide to go ahead, prepare yourself as well as possible for success by communicating frequently with the instructor about areas you may be having difficulty with. You may also want to seek help through Academic Support.
